CHEAPEST GENDER FILTER WE COVER By Lexi Updated 2 Aug 2026

Emerald Chat Review: Reputation You Can Buy

Emerald built its whole identity on a reputation system meant to make people behave. Then it started selling reputation. That tension is the most interesting thing about the platform.

THE VERDICT
Rating: 3.6/5

The broadest free tier of any platform we cover, and the cheapest gender filter at around $5.89 a month. Conversations here are noticeably longer and more civil than pure roulette.

The pool is small, so waits are longer. And the karma system that gives Emerald its reputation is undermined by the fact you can buy karma.

The Karma System, and Its Problem

Emerald launched in 2016 trying to fix what was broken about random video chat: bots, explicit content, and nobody being accountable for anything. Its answer was karma. Users rate each other after conversations, good ratings improve your matches, bad ones worsen them.

It works, up to a point, and for a reason that has little to do with the mechanics. Knowing your behaviour is being scored changes how people act. That alone produces a more civil experience than platforms where nothing follows you.

Karma packs sell for around $5.99.

Someone with a damaged score can repair it with money rather than behaviour. That doesn’t make the system pointless, since most users won’t bother, but it does mean a high karma score is not evidence of anything. Treat it as a soft signal, not a guarantee.

Users also report the system being gamed by trolls, and that a run of quick skips can lower your score without you doing anything wrong. At least one longer-standing user reports that karma-based bans were removed entirely and karma is now purely an indicator, with human moderators handling enforcement instead. We can’t confirm the current mechanics, so treat karma as a reputation display of uncertain weight.

What’s Free and What Emerald Gold Costs

The free tier is unusually generous. One-to-one video, one-to-one text, group text rooms, and interest-based matching all cost nothing. Most platforms in this category give you video and a next button.

TierCostWhat it adds
Free$0Video, text, group rooms, interest matching
Emerald Gold~$5.89/monthGender filter, priority matching, no ads, picture sending
PlatinumNot statedA higher tier exists; its pricing isn’t well documented
Karma pack~$5.99Repairs a damaged karma score

At around $5.89 a month, Emerald Gold is the cheapest gender filter of any platform we cover. Camsurf charges $19.99 for the same thing.

Filtering options reportedly extend beyond gender to intimacy, country and language, spread across the Gold and Platinum tiers. Which sits where isn’t clearly documented, so check before subscribing if a specific filter is why you’re paying.

Skip the App

Emerald has apps on both stores, and app store reviews are consistently poor. The complaint that recurs most is that features free on the website are paywalled in the app, alongside messages failing to send, login problems and poor audio in video calls.

This is a pattern rather than a quirk. Several platforms in this category monetise their apps more aggressively than their websites, because in-app purchases are easier to charge than web payments. Our mobile apps comparison covers it.

The practical advice: use Emerald in a mobile browser rather than installing anything.

Pros and Cons

WHAT WORKS
  • · Broadest free tier of any platform we cover
  • · Cheapest gender filter at around $5.89/month
  • · Interest matching produces longer conversations
  • · Being rated does change how people behave
WHAT DOESN’T
  • · Karma is purchasable, which undercuts the whole idea
  • · Small pool means noticeably longer waits
  • · The app is worse than the website and paywalls free features
  • · Text chat often matches you with people who don’t respond

Who Emerald Chat Is For

If your complaint about random video chat is that conversations go nowhere, this is the platform most likely to fix it. Interest matching and a rated community produce a different quality of interaction, and the free tier is broad enough to test that without paying.

If you want speed and volume, the small pool will frustrate you and Shagle is the better fit. If you want strict moderation, Camsurf is stricter. Our free platforms comparison covers the full field.

Common Questions

Yes. Karma packs are sold for around $5.99, which lets someone repair a damaged score with money rather than behaviour. That doesn’t make the system worthless, but it does mean a high karma score isn’t proof of anything.

Around $5.89 a month, which is the cheapest gender filter of the platforms we cover. It also removes ads, adds priority matching and enables picture sending in text chat. There’s a higher Platinum tier as well, though it’s less widely documented.

One-to-one video chat, one-to-one text chat, group text rooms, and interest-based matching. That’s a genuinely broad free tier compared with most platforms in this category. Gender filtering and ad removal are the main paid features.

Reports suggest not. App store reviews consistently describe features that are free on the website being paywalled in the app, alongside technical problems with messaging and video. The browser version appears to be the better experience.

Probably somewhat, though not because of karma alone. Knowing your behaviour is rated does raise the standard of conduct. The platform also runs moderation and a reporting system. But it’s still anonymous random chat, and users report encountering inappropriate content.
