Every Random Video Chat Platform We’ve Reviewed
Eighteen platforms, checked against sources, pricing verified, marketing claims flagged when they don’t hold up. Organised by what the platform actually does rather than by how the marketing describes it.
We narrowed our coverage from more than 45 old reviews to 18 keepers because we’d rather cover 18 platforms deeply than 60 shallowly. Every review below is written from checked sources with the specific facts we could verify (and honest gaps where we couldn’t).
CooMeet is our only affiliate partner and the only platform we earn from. No other review on this site pays us anything. Reviews by Lexi. Full disclosure here.
Random 1-on-1 Video Chat
Classic one-click pairing with a stranger. Camera on, chat starts, hit next when you’re done. The closest thing to the original Chatroulette model.
What actually changed. Still running, heavily rebuilt around selfie-based matching and a much more moderated experience.
The one platform that hasn’t gone freemium. Free country filter, free games, no premium tier at all.
Four modes, not one. What the segmented modes actually deliver versus classic random pairing.
The best mobile app in the field, and the harshest ban policy. What actually gets you banned.
Reputation you can buy. What the karma system actually gates, and what happens when paying skips it.
Filter-Based Random Video Chat
Gender, location or interest filters applied on top of random pairing. Almost always the filters live behind a paywall, coin economy or subscription.
What the 20-minute allowance costs, and why the sticker price isn’t the real one.
The gender filter isn’t free. What Camsurf Plus at $19.99 actually unlocks.
The “free” country filter isn’t. Two countries, and one is whichever you’re already in.
Verification is opt-in and paid, which means most users aren’t verified. Real-time text translation.
Country zones, not just a filter. Nine pre-segmented experiences plus live translation.
Nobody agrees on the price. The weekly plan at $6.99 works out to about $28 a month.
Random Video Chat With Distinctive Features
Platforms doing something specific enough that it’s worth naming: unusual pricing models, unusual product mechanics, unusual technical choices, or unusual histories.
The 15-second speed-match format Apple pulled from the App Store. What that means.
Free for women, about a dollar a minute for men. The pricing asymmetry is the model.
Cam-to-cam with face detection that runs locally in your browser, not on their servers.
Translation is the whole point. No account needed, and what real-time translation actually costs the conversation.
Shut down in 2023. What replaced it, and why people still search for it.
Group Rooms and Live Streaming
Not random pairing at all. These platforms often get grouped with random video chat because of how they market themselves, but their actual product is many-to-many or one-to-many broadcasting.
How We Reviewed These Platforms
One question per review. Every review starts from asking what’s actually non-obvious about the platform. Not “what does it do” (the marketing page covers that), but “what’s the specific thing worth knowing before you sign up”. Sometimes that’s a pricing trick (Shagle’s weekly-plan math), sometimes it’s a product truth the platform buries (Monkey’s App Store removal), sometimes it’s a design detail nobody else in the field has (FTF Live’s client-side face detection).
Cross-checked sources. For each fact we assert, we look for confirmation across multiple independent sources. When sources disagree (Tinychat’s pricing varies from $4 to $45 across reviews) we say so instead of picking one. When independent coverage is thin (FTF Live, 1v1Chat) we say that too, and hedge the specific claims accordingly.
Verified marketing claims. “Gender-verified” doesn’t always mean what it sounds like. “Face detection” can mean bot-check or identity-check. “Cam to cam” describes two different business models. Where a platform’s marketing implies more than the technical reality delivers, we say so.
5-point rating. The rating reflects our judgement on pricing honesty, moderation practices, distinctive features, and how well the platform delivers what it markets. Ratings aren’t rankings; two platforms at the same rating can serve different needs equally well. Ratings live in the review, not just the number.
Common Questions
We cover platforms readers actually search for. Established platforms (Chatroulette, Camsurf), name-recognised but changed (Omegle, Monkey), and lesser-known but distinctive (FTF Live’s client-side face detection, LuckyCrush’s asymmetric pricing). We don’t review platforms just because they exist. We review them when there’s something specific to say.
CooMeet is Vexycam’s only affiliate partner. Every other review on this site pays us nothing. That means our incentive to recommend a platform doesn’t correlate with what we say about it. When we criticise a platform’s pricing model or moderation, that’s what we found, not what a partner asked us to write.
We check each review when we notice something has changed (a pricing shift, a new feature, an availability change, an App Store removal) and refresh the specific fact. Every review shows the last-updated date at the top.
We narrowed our coverage from more than 45 old reviews to 18 keepers because we’d rather cover 18 platforms deeply than 60 shallowly. If a platform you’re looking for isn’t here, it’s either been replaced by something better in the same category, or we didn’t find enough verifiable information to review it responsibly.
Yes, on a 5-point scale. The rating reflects our judgement on pricing honesty, moderation practices, distinctive features, and how well the platform delivers what it markets. Ratings aren’t rankings; two platforms at the same rating can serve different needs equally well.
