Chatspin Review: The ‘Free’ Country Filter Isn’t

Chatspin markets a country filter as a free feature. What free members actually get is two countries: the United States, and whichever one they’re in. The AR face filters are the platform’s real free differentiator, and the weekly plan is priced to catch people who don’t do the maths.

THE VERDICT
Rating: 3.3/5

Real iOS and Android apps, the first browser platform in the category to ship AR face filters, and free random chat that works. If what you want is playful video chat with masks, Chatspin does that better than most.

The friction is around the marketed filters. Country filtering on the free tier is effectively two countries, real gender filtering is paid, and the weekly billing option is priced about 50% higher per month than the monthly. Worth using free; worth reading the small print before subscribing.

The Free Country Filter Is Two Countries

Every published Chatspin review mentions country filtering as a free feature. What that means in practice is much narrower than the marketing suggests. A free member’s country filter offers exactly two options: the United States, and whichever country they happen to be in.

For someone in the United States, that isn’t a filter. It’s the same result as no filter at all. For someone anywhere else, it’s a toggle between their own country and the US, which is a filter in the technical sense but not one that gets you closer to talking to people in Japan or Brazil or Germany. Real country filtering, meaning any of the other countries, is behind Chatspin Plus.

This is a subtler version of the pattern Camsurf runs. Camsurf simply paywalls the gender filter. Chatspin lists country filtering as a free feature and delivers something that functionally isn’t. Worth naming, because the difference between “paid” and “technically free but useless” matters when you’re deciding whether to subscribe.

The Weekly Price Is a Trap

Chatspin Plus is offered at two billing cadences. The weekly rate looks cheaper on the page. Multiplied out, it isn’t.

PlanSticker priceCost per month
Monthly$19.99 / month$19.99
Weekly$6.99 / week~$30.27

We’ve done the maths so the comparison is like-for-like. The weekly plan runs about 50% more per month than the monthly for the same features.

This is the same trap we flagged on Shagle. Weekly-priced subscriptions in this category are almost always more expensive per month than the monthly equivalent, and they auto-rebill. If Chatspin Plus is worth it to you, the monthly plan is the honest option.

Chatspin does not offer refunds on either plan. The weekly plan is sometimes framed as a “cheaper trial”, the way to try Chatspin Plus without committing to a month. What it actually is, is a higher per-month price with a shorter cancellation window.

The AR Face Filters Are the Actual Free Feature

Chatspin was the first browser-based random video chat platform to ship AR face filters, back in 2018. Glasses, hats, makeup, costumes, animal masks, effects that track your face in real time. This is the platform’s genuine differentiator, and unlike the country and gender filters, it’s on the free tier.

Two things are worth naming. The face filters are fun in a way most platforms in this category aren’t; if you find pure random video chat awkward, the masks give both people something to react to and defuse the first few seconds of a call. That’s a real product benefit and probably why Chatspin’s user reviews skew warmer than the rest of the field.

The second thing is more important. An AR mask over your face is not anonymity. Your face shape, movement patterns, voice, background and lighting all remain identifying signals. If you’re using Chatspin because you don’t want to be recognisable on camera, the masks are theatre, not privacy. Our anonymous video chat guide covers what actual anonymity requires and why it’s harder than most platforms suggest.

The Basics

Registration is required to use Chatspin, on web or in the apps. Signup is quick, with email or a social account.

The apps on iOS and Android are actively maintained and better than the mobile web. If you’re chatting from a phone, use the app.

Text chat alongside video is supported, which most competitors also do. Basic previews of a partner’s age and country are shown before you accept a call, which is genuinely useful.

Moderation is reactive rather than proactive. There’s no AI content detection layer comparable to Emerald Chat‘s karma system, and no strong human moderation team comparable to Camsurf‘s. Age is checked with a terms-of-service checkbox. Standard for the category.

Who Chatspin Is For

Worth trying if you want playful video chat with masks and effects, you’re happy using the free tier, and the country filter isn’t your reason for being there. The face filters genuinely change the feel of the platform.

Not the right platform if country filtering is what you’re after. In that case Shagle and Bazoocam are the only free country filters in the field. If you want gender filtering, Emerald Chat at around $6 a month is the cheapest paid route we cover; our filters comparison covers the full range.

Common Questions

Yes, with limits. Random video chat, text chat, AR face filters and basic use are all on the free tier. Chatspin Plus, the paid tier, unlocks the real country and gender filters and removes ads. Chatspin Plus is $19.99 a month or $6.99 a week.

Barely. For a free user, the country ‘filter’ offers only two options: the United States, and whichever country you’re already in. For someone in the US that isn’t a filter at all. For anyone else, it’s a one-country toggle. Full country filtering requires Chatspin Plus.

$19.99 a month direct, or $6.99 a week. Multiplied out, the weekly plan costs roughly $30 a month for the same features, which is about 50% more than the monthly plan. The weekly rate looks cheaper on the checkout page and isn’t.

Yes, on both iOS and Android. Chatspin was one of the first random video chat platforms to prioritise mobile, and the apps are still actively updated.

Chatspin has standard reactive moderation, no age verification beyond a terms-of-service checkbox, and every platform in this category is 18+. The AR face masks are worth naming separately: an overlay on your face is not anonymity. Your face shape, movements, voice and background all remain identifying. Our anonymous video chat guide covers this in detail.

How we reviewed this: compiled from multiple independent reviews checked 6 Aug 2026 rather than direct testing this time. Where sources agreed on a fact (iOS and Android apps, AR face filters on the free tier, Chatspin Plus at $19.99/mo or $6.99/wk, free country filter limited to US and country of residence) we’ve stated it.
